The concept of Ambient Intelligence propagates a vision of future environments, which offer context-adapted services and assist their inhabitants in everyday activities. While intelligent office environments are likely to bring a variety of economical advantages, their implementation will also have a considerable impact on the way people work and interact in these environments. Therefore, it is most crucial to regard and involve potential users right from the beginning of the design process.
Carsten Röcker identifies the desires as well as concerns of potential end users regarding the implementation of Ambient Intelligence technologies in work environments. Based on the results of a cross-cultural user study, the author extracts general requirements for the design of intelligent office applications.
The author: born 1975; studies in electrical engineering, management, computer science and psychology; from 2001 until 2006 research associate at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Information and Publication Systems (IPSI) in Darmstadt;
2007 until 2008 visting researcher at the Distributed Cognition and HCI Laboratory at the University of California in San Diego; since 2008 senior researcher at the Human-Technology Center at RWTH Aachen University; author and co-author of over 40 scientific publications in the areas of Ambient Intelligence and Intellectual Teamwork.
